New projectAnd it’s not comics. Sadly, comics don’t make sense at the moment. Sure, there’ll be a second STRANGEWAYS book once I decide to spend the money on it. ‘Cause the market has made sure that’s the only way this will happen. I get it. This new project is going out under the working title MY WINGS ARE BLACK, and that will probably change at least ten times before I’m done with it. Likely not to be finished before 2011, being realistic. The day job (which is also writing, thank you very much) will have to take precedent because that’s what pays the bills. And I’m all about the Benjamins. But here’s a small taste of what’s in store. I keyworded it on Twitter yesterday, but pictures may tell it better. more after the jump
My friend Chris suggests that it sounds like a Tim Powers novel. I hope that I can get it to sound more like a Matt Maxwell novel by the time I’m done with it. But it’s certainly informed by reading of authors like Powers, Blaylock, Gibson, Morrison, Chandler, Kadrey and maybe even McCarthy. Some other stuff in the pipe, too. But none of it’s yet been announced so I’m not going to draw down the wrath of my editors by doing it here. Hell, I may even try to blog again, but probably not about comics too much and maybe not for awhile. Yeah, comics will only break your heart. Or at least your wallet. Truthfully, though, there hasn’t been much to tickle my fancy of late. Maybe that Brendan McCarthy SPIDER-MAN/DR. STRANGE gig. That was nice. Just read CROSSED, which had every chance to trip itself up and didn’t. But the current mainstream titles? Not much there there. Oh sure, you have THUNDERBOLTS and a HULK book that are worth reading, but there’s only so much playing in daddy’s shoes but running and hiding once you have to face up to big-boy choices that I can take. Mainstream superheroes can’t do that. They can play at it, but can’t or won’t go all the way. I mean, Morrison’s BATMAN can, but I’m shocked that DC is letting him write the book that way. The arc with Frazier Irving is downright terrifying and great, but it’s like seeing FIGHT CLUB come out of a major studio; utterly and completely baffling from a business/culture standpoint. Anyways, enough about comics. I won’t be doing much talk about those. ‘Cept maybe THE OUTFIT, but that sounds like a fair bit of work, because there’s a lot to talk about. 3 comments to New project |

Geez, we must be on a wavelength right now. I spent last night gathering up images to put in a folder called “Lovecraft Texas.”
Thinking back on my Twitter reaction, I suppose it would be a Powers-esque novel only if there was a secret history of a well-known historical figure (Einstein, Chaplin, Kim Philby, Siegel, Byron, etc.) and a lead character that suffers from some sort of mutilation.
Whenever I see that picture of LA City Hall under construction I thinking of this dialogue:
“I guess they just don’t make them like they used to.”
“No! Nobody ever made them like this! The architect was either a certified genius or an aesthetic wacko!”
“Ray, for a moment, pretend that I don’t know anything about metallurgy, engineering or physics and just tell me what the hell is going on.”
“You never studied. The whole building is a huge super-conductive antenna that was designed and built expressly for the purpose of pulling in and concentrating spiritual turbulence. Your girlfriend, Pete, lives in the corner penthouse of Spook Central.”
Ken – Small minds think alike.
Chris – No secret history of any well-known figures. No mutilations (at the start).
Heck, it doesn’t even take place in Los Angeles, but that picture was right.
